Forget the picture-perfect beaches you've seen online; Jeju's real summer magic happens after dark, and I'm about to show you where to find it.
Everyone will tell you to go to Hyeopjae Beach. And look, I get it. It’s the supermodel of Jeju beaches—white sand, turquoise water, that perfect view of Biyangdo Island floating in the distance. It’s the picture you came here to take. But after you’ve taken that picture, you should pack up your stuff and go to Iho Tewoo instead. For a genuinely fun, no-fuss, last-until-2-AM kind of beach day, the one by the airport is the one you actually want.
I’ve lived here long enough to see the cycle. Friends visit, I take them to Hyeopjae, they ooh and ahh, and then 30 minutes later they’re bored. The secret about Hyeopjae is that it’s more of a postcard than a place. Iho Tewoo is the opposite. It’s a place, through and through.

- 📍Address: Jeju-do, Jeju-si, Ihoil-dong
The Case Against Jeju's Favorite Beach
Okay, let’s talk about Hyeopjae. It’s stunning. No debate there. You walk over the dune and see that impossible-looking water, and you understand why it’s on every single "Top 10 Jeju" list. But actually trying to spend a day there can be a bit of a letdown.
First, the water is absurdly shallow. You can walk 100 meters out and the water will barely be at your waist. It’s fantastic if you have toddlers, but if you’re an adult who actually wants to swim, it’s like trying to take a bath in a puddle. You end up just sort of… wading. Second, the crowds. It’s the default beach, so everyone goes there. Finding a spot for your towel can feel like a competitive sport in peak season (mid-July to mid-August).
Renting a parasol and a mat will set you back 20,000 KRW, which is the standard price, but you’ll be packed in so tight you can hear the conversation of the family next to you. It’s beautiful, yes, but it’s not relaxing. It’s a production.
Why the "Airport Beach" is Secretly the Best
Now, let's talk about Iho Tewoo. The guidebooks dismiss it as a city beach, just 13 minutes from Jeju Airport. They say that like it's a bad thing. Are you kidding me? That’s its superpower. You can land, drop your bags, and be in the water in under an hour. Or, even better, you can squeeze in one last swim on your departure day before heading to the airport. It’s maximum beach time with minimum hassle.
The beach itself is great. The sand is soft, the water is deep enough to actually swim in, and you have the iconic red and white horse-shaped lighthouses framing the view. It’s got a totally different vibe from Hyeopjae—less "serene nature," more "let's have a good time." There’s even a free seawater pool (해수풀장) running from 10 AM to 7 PM if you have kids who are nervous about the ocean.
But the real reason Iho Tewoo wins is what happens after the sun goes down. While other beaches are packing up, Iho Tewoo is just getting started. The lights switch on, and it stays open until 9 PM for swimming during the peak summer weeks. And that leads to its ultimate trump card.
The late-night beach pub you won't find anywhere else
This is the secret. Right on the sand, there’s a sprawling haebyeon pocha (해변포차), a beach pub tent that runs until August 31st. It opens at 5 PM and doesn’t close until 2 in the morning. There’s no seating fee, no minimum order. You just grab a table, listen to the waves, and order ridiculous amounts of food and beer.
And the menu is huge. You can go for something simple like jeyuk bokkeum (spicy stir-fried pork) for 35,000 KRW or a seafood pancake for 25,000 KRW. Or you can go all out. I saw a group of guys order the Traditional Whole Chicken (토종닭) for 90,000 KRW. It looked insane. We usually get the grilled prawns (50,000 KRW) and a few bottles of Cass. The other night a stray cat kept trying to steal one of our prawns, and the owner just laughed and shooed it away. It’s that kind of place.
You can sit there for hours, feet in the sand, with the airport lights twinkling in the distance. This is an experience you just can’t get at the more famous, "prettier" beaches. This is a real Jeju summer night.
Okay, But What If I Want to Surf or Snorkel?
This is the fair counterargument. Iho Tewoo is the best all-rounder, but it’s not the specialist. If you have a specific mission, you should go elsewhere.
If your goal is surfing, then Jungmun Saekdal Beach is your spot. No question. It's on the south side of the island in Seogwipo and gets proper waves. The sand is coarse (definitely wear aqua shoes) and the vibe is all about action. Renting a parasol with a table and four chairs is 20,000 KRW, and a tube will run you 15,000 KRW (that includes a 5,000 KRW deposit). It's not a beginner's swimming beach, but for surfing, it's the best.
For snorkeling, you want to avoid the big, sandy beaches entirely. The best spots are the smaller, rockier coves. My personal favorite is a little unofficial spot called Conan Beach, over in Gujwa-eup on the east coast. The water is crystal clear and shallow, and you’ll see tons of little fish darting around the rocks. The catch? There are zero facilities. No rentals, no showers, nothing. You have to bring all your own gear and be prepared to drive to nearby Woljeongri Beach to use their public showers. It’s for the dedicated snorkeler, not the casual beachgoer.
So yeah, if you're a surfer, go to Jungmun. If you're a serious snorkeler, hit up Conan. But if you’re like 90% of people who just want a great, fun, convenient day at the beach that can stretch long into the night? It’s Iho Tewoo, every time.

My Two Cents
The biggest argument against Iho Tewoo is the view. People come to Jeju for epic, untouched nature, and a beach with city lights in the background feels like a compromise. I get it. You want the wild, windswept coastline you saw in the dramas.
But you can get that almost anywhere else on the island. Go hike an oreum in the morning. Drive the coastal road in the afternoon. Jeju’s natural beauty isn’t scarce. What’s scarce is a place that combines a good beach with genuine, local fun that doesn’t end at 7 PM. Don't sacrifice an amazing experience for a slightly better photo.
